Throughout history the meaning of numbers have played an important role in the life of mankind. Numbers are used in supertitions, religions and in mythology around the globe.
Plato called the study of number symbolism "the highest level of knowledge". In numerology the meaning of numbers are thoroughly analysed . Most cultures have their own system of interpertating the symbolism of numbers.
Pythagoras believed numbers had souls, as well as magical powers. The Pythagoreans divided the numbers into two groups: odd and even, male and female, light and dark etc.. Their most sacred number was number ten.

What we associate with a number will depend on our believes and the society we belong to. As eight is an auspicious number in China, it is no surprise that the Summer Olympics opened 8/8/08 and 8 minutes past 8 pm. Nine is another lucky number in China, but in Japan nine is considered an unlucky number. Many in the West feel four is a good number. In Asia tetraphobia is common.
